San Cristóbal de las Casas is a city in the Central Highlands region of the Mexican state of Chiapas. It was the capital of the state until 1892, and is still considered the cultural capital of Chiapas. San Cristobal sits in a small valley surrounded by hills and is an explosion of vivid colors--casas in shebert shades; golden Spanish colonial churches with red-tiled roofs; wrought iron balconies over-flowing with flowers; brilliant hues of hand-made handicrafts, and the timeless beauty of the local indigenous people.
