One million of Chiapas' total population of 3.5 million are indigenous people. Ten miles northwest of San Cristobal, nestled in a green valley, is the town of Zinacantan, a community of Tzotzil people, one of numerous Mayan groups.  Flowers abound--not only are they are the chief agricultural crop, but they adorn the altar of San Lorenzo church in profusion and grace the exquisite textile handiwork produced by the women on backstrap looms.
